Building a Marketing Community

The recent PayPal drama has taken our little industry by storm - for better or worse. I would say for the better.
Why? Well, because it forces us in this industry to examine ourselves. This examination can be taken from many perspectives. One perspective is Networking.

Networking is Vital to the Internet Marketing Industry

One thing that is important to understand in our line of business is that we are not alone, nor should we want to be. This can be seen from the way many marketers are communicating with each other as to how the recent PayPal drama has affected their business and what they have done or will do about it. It is an outstanding thing to be able to do - and so "effortlessly." We don't have to arrange for meetings at cafes, restaurants or other areas. All we have to do is go online. The question is, do we talk to other marketers? If your answer to that question is no, then you need to change that RIGHT AWAY!

Together We Stand, Divided We Fall

When people in our industry communicate with each other we are contributing not only to the success of our individual businesses, but to the industry as a whole. You have probably heard the advice to "surround yourself with people smarter than yourself." That is what we do when we network. Don't be too put off by the term 'smarter.' Being 'smarter than someone else or someone else being smarter than you has nothing to do with our level of education - it has to do with our experiences and skills. We all have many different experiences in life and in business. We have had successes and we have had failures. The key is to learn from those things. The more we discuss with others the successes and failures that they have had, the more we learn. We can ALL learn SOMETHING from SOMEONE.

There is No "One Size Fits All" Solution.

When we network with others we will discover that people have different ways of doing the same task or achieving the same goal. Sometimes their method is not necessarily "right or wrong," its simply "different. Therefore we should try not to be too opinionated and realize that sometimes we will simply have to "agree to disagree" and drive on.

The Internet Marketing Industry is much to vast to get stuck in one particular view. If it works for you (and is moral and ethical), then by all means do your thing. But can you adjust "your thing" according to some tips or tidbits of information that you received from others? Sometimes we have to "climb down off of our egos" and admit that we need to change the way we do things. That is simply the way of business and the way of life.

Who do you surround yourself with?

Personally, being a part of different "marketing systems" or "marketing communities" has been very beneficial for me. The main ones being Click Track Profit, Build A Biz Online and Mardox Marketing (in the order of my exposure to them). Being a part of those communities or systems has helped me gain some very valuable knowledge over the years.

Don't stand alone - especially now. The wind of change is blowing in the industry. Together we can keep from being blown over by it.

The PayPal Drama – Good for the industry?

Anyone who owns a Traffic Exchange, Safelist, Membership Site, etc should be aware of the latest "slap in the face" by PayPal. It has sent shock-waves through the industry. The question is, who's fault is it? Before we all start yelling 'it's not fair' maybe we need to evaluate our own part in this dilemma.

Those of us who use PayPal exclusively have to ask ourselves the question - "do I have all my eggs in one basket?"

No one saw this coming, but it came. PayPal could have given us fair warning, but they didn't. So now here we are. For those who already had other payment options set up on their sites - BRAVO! Only some of their "eggs" were "broken" by PayPal. For the others - were we all simply too comfortable with PayPal? So comfortable that we didn't even consider a backup plan in case something went wrong? Hmmmmm....

Something very positive that has come out of this is that it forces those who are honest and serious players in this industry to start focusing on the VALUE and LEGITIMACY of what we have to offer. Like it or not the industry is flooded with hype and with enough folks ready to jump on anything that may make them a quick buck. That is NOT what this industry is supposed to be about. Are we letting the "snake oil salesmen" dictate how we are looked at to the general public and to those entering the industry?


If you get paid to do specific tasks for someone who runs an online business, THAT is a job. If you want to earn money by promoting products and services online, THAT is a business. There is a huge difference, and it's high time that those of us who truly care about the legitimacy of our industry to start making sure that is known as we go about our daily business and advertising. 

There is a lot to be said on this issue. It would really be nice to hear what you folks out there think about what I have said here.

How Important Is Branding?

Think of certain stores, restaurants, etc that you frequent. Do they have a logo?

Think of places that you don’t necessarily frequent or do business with at all. Do you know their logo?

In the offline business world, logos are the lifeblood of any company – it’s their “bread and butter.”
Offline business owners know that if their logo is known, that translates as business for them.

Why do we think differently in Online Business?

I can’t tell you how often I see white or grey “blobs” on promotions instead of a profile picture or logo.

How in the HECK is someone going to “know, like and trust” you if you don’t even put your picture on your ad?
Answer: THEY WON’T!

Branding is very important in the online business world. Unfortunately, the mistake that is often made in our industry is that people underestimate the value of branding. The advantage we have in the online business industry is that we have the opportunity to connect personally with our “customers” at a fraction of the cost that it takes offline business to do the same thing. We have the chance to put our personal brand on all the advertising we send out at a very low cost and often even for free.

Having said that, there ARE folks who use profile pictures on their ads, but sometimes these are pictures of their children, pets, famous people or brand logos (which is illegal without permission). It’s their choice if they want to do that, but does that say anything about THEM or the brand that they want to promote?

We need to get our act together in the online business industry if we are serious about being successful. Times have changed folks. The stuff that used to work in the past doesn’t work anymore. People want to deal with people that they can practically “reach out and touch.” People want to be able to identify a product with a person. People want to buy from folks that they “know like and trust” if they have the choice to do so.

We can’t get folks to know us if we are hiding who we are. If we are scared to put our face on our promotions then maybe we should not be in this business.

Sprint or Marathon?

There is an important question we need to personally consider when doing business online, are we in a sprint or are we in a marathon?

The same mistake is made time and time again in online business – we fall for the hype of believing we can make a lot of money in a short period of time. This is not only a problem for newcomers to the industry. Sometimes “experienced” marketers fall for the same hype.

We need to compare our being in business online as being in a marathon as opposed to a sprint. Runners in a marathon know that it is not the fastest person who crosses the finish line first, but the one who sets a steady and reasonable pace according to his/her physical condition. Runners in a marathon also realize that Completing the marathon is more important than Winning it. Runners who complete a marathon have a sense of satisfaction that no one can take a way from them – not matter if they came in 3rd or 300th.

For those in the industry that feel they are in a sprint will exert lots of energy in a short time and then either give up or go on to the next “shinny object.” Granted, it is not wrong to want to earn lots of money in a short period of time, but in today’s business climate it is not very realistic. Yes, I said today’s BUSINESS climate. We in the Online Business Industry are in BUSINESS. The sooner we realize that and all that being in business entails, the sooner we will have more realistic expectations of what we can accomplish.

There is a great deal that can be said on this subject. That is just my “two cents” in a “nutshell.” No, I have not been as successful online as I would like in all the years I have been at it, but I have Stuck With It “all these years.” I have no one to blame but myself. Period. There is no “fair” or “unfair” in business (relatively speaking of course), it’s simply BUSINESS. We have to learn how to take the bad with the good and “suck it up and drive on” as they used to tell us in the army.

Do you have the “BMW mindset?”

If you want to build an Online Business – ANY type of Online Business, then you need to have the “BMW Mindset.” 

‘What the heck is John talking about?’ you ask. Well, check this out: If you had the desire to buy a new BMW and didn’t have the money for it, what would you do? Would you save up the money that you need and do things to earn some extra money so that you could reach your goal more sooner than later? Or would you complain that the car dealerships ought to lower the prices they charge so that you could afford to buy a BMW from them? The second scenario is ridiculous right? But that is exactly what the Online Business owner of today (and yes, even you simply do Affiliate Marketing or promoting whatever it is you promote, YOU ARE RUNNING AN ONLINE BUSINESS!) expects to happen. Many marketers today seem to think that they should be able to run a business online for next to nothing.

That is a part of what is wrong with the industry today. People REFUSE TO INVEST in their business.
They would rather believe the hype about becoming rich overnight by pushing a few buttons or posting a few links.
That is exactly why upwards of 90% of Online Marketers don’t earn any real money.
The Internet Marketers that
do earn money know all the “blood sweat and tears” that is involved and are not afraid to tell folks about this “unsexy” aspect of the industry.

The question is… where do YOU fit in to this?
If you think you can have success in this industry by only doing “free things” then you are fooling yourself.
If you would not walk into a car dealership and ask them to lower the price of their BMW so you can buy it,
WHY ON EARTH would you reason that you should be able to be successful in Online business buy investing little or no TIME and MONEY into whatever it is that you do online?

Don’t get e wrong, free is OK. Free is pretty darned cool, but it is by no means enough. When we don’t have the money to invest then we NEED to “do the free thing” so that we can keep our name out there and BUILD OUR LIST so that we have an audience of folks who have a true interest in what we have to offer. If you have a bunch of “give me a whole lot for nothing” people on your list (and YES you do NEED TO BUILD YOUR LIST) – then you will not make any money in the Online Business industry.

Are You Ready To Profit Online?

Well… many people thing they are, but since it has been said that 98% of Markers fail at their online businesses that means you may not be as ready as you think!

What is Online Marketing all about? Many people think they know, but they really don’t have a clue. There is a lot of junk out there, and lots of folks telling other folks how they can make a quick and easy profit in the Internet Marketing/Online business world. Nothing could be further from the truth.

My name is John L. Brewer. I am in no way, shape or form an expert on marketing. I’m just another guy out here trying to do my thing and do it well. I would like to share my thoughts with you, let you know about the things I’m working on or am interested in, and also find out your thoughts on things.

This is the first post of my all new Internet Marketing blog/website. It may have a different look in the future, but I wanted to finally put my plan of publishing a marketing site. Taking action is very important. Taking the right kind of action is even more important.

But remember – nothing but NOTHING comes from nothing. So let’s shake that “I can do everything for free” mentality out of our heads and get down to what being successful in this industry really means.
